OLD FURNITURE: DONATE, SELL, OR HAUL AWAY?

Skip the decision fatigue. Text a photo to (708) 832-6504 and we'll tell you honestly if it's donation-worthy or not.
Every piece of furniture you're getting rid of has three possible paths: donate it, sell it, or haul it away. Picking the right one saves you time and, in some cases, gets you a little money back. Here's how to think through it.
DONATE IT IF...
- It's clean, structurally sound, and free of major stains, tears, or odors. Donation centers can't resell damaged items, so they'll turn it away.
- It's a couch, dresser, table, or chair in working condition — these move fast at places like Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
- Mattresses are the exception. Many donation centers won't accept mattresses at all due to bedbug and sanitation policies — always call ahead before you load one up.
SELL IT IF...
- It's a higher-value or solid wood piece that's worth the effort of listing, photographing, and coordinating pickup
- You have time — selling typically takes days to weeks, not hours
- You're comfortable with strangers coming to your home for pickup, or can arrange to meet elsewhere
Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are the usual routes locally. Just know that "free" listings move faster than priced ones — if you need it gone by a specific date, price it to sell or mark it free.
HAUL IT AWAY IF...
- It's damaged, stained, or has odor — no donation center will take it
- You've tried selling or donating and it's still sitting there
- You're on a timeline (move-out date, renovation, closing on a sale) and don't have time to wait for a buyer
- It's heavy or awkward — a sectional, a sleeper sofa, an old armoire — and moving it yourself isn't realistic
WHY NOT JUST DO IT YOURSELF?
| DIY (Truck Rental + Landfill) | Professional Removal | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $50-100 rental + $30-80 dump fee + your time | Starts at $75, all-in |
| Labor | You carry, load, and unload it | Our crew does the lifting |
| Time | Half a day, minimum | Usually under an hour |
| Disposal | You figure out where it's allowed | We handle responsible disposal or donation drop-off |
Once you factor in truck rental, gas, a landfill fee, and a few hours of your day, DIY often costs close to what professional removal does — minus the sore back.
